Holiday Homes East Coast Nz

While you've spent most of the year distancing from other people, nothing sounds more appealing than getting away from it all, and everyone else, on your very own private beach. There are plenty of secluded (and some surprisingly affordable) options across the country to book for summer. From exclusive campgrounds to secluded cabins in the winterless north, here's where you can stretch out on your own private beach.

ROCKY BAY COVE, TUTUKAKA

Access to this secluded campground is available on a very limited and exclusive basis. Only one booking is taken at a time so campers have exclusive use of the property. You'll just need a four-wheel-drive vehicle or boat to get there. Found five minutes away from Tutukaka, Rocky Bay Cove is set amongst landscaped grounds and a collection of designer art. The $380 per night fee (for a maximum of 12 guests) includes use of all facilities and equipment, from the boat ramp and barbecue to fishing gear and crayfish pots. You'll also have access to kayaks, a dingy and snorkelling gear during your stay so you can explore the picturesque cove. On land, the art trails weave their way through native bush past a life-size giant moa and NZ's largest bucket. And for when that all becomes too much, there's a floating golfing green in the bay.

How much? $380 per night.

CIRCULAR BAY, WAIHEKE ISLAND

For both wine and a relaxing overnight stay try the Mudbrick Cottage at Circular Bay. Situated at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, this private family cottage sits on its own 800-metre stretch of unspoilt, pōhutukawa-lined coast. After a private beach swim there's the option of venturing out for an afternoon of wine tasting at the nearby Poderi Crisci, Man O'War or Passage Rock wineries. And then, why not finish off your day in the outdoor spa? The three-room retreat accommodates six people comfortably, though only one room has a door. It's perfect for a weekend break, romantic escape, or family holiday. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is also essential for your adventure.

How much? From $650 per night.

BUTTERFLY BAY, TAURANGA BAY

Further north near the beautiful Whangaroa Harbour is this retreat overlooking its own private beach. The Butterfly Bay homestead is surrounded by 85 acres of regenerative native bush, giant pohutukawa, waterfall and gardens. More than just an enticing name, Butterfly Bay doubles as one of the largest butterfly sanctuaries in Australasia. Monarch butterflies gather in their thousands along the stretch of sheltered coastline. The three-level house comes with its own wrap-around deck showcasing the superb views of the Pacific Ocean. Make use of the equipment in the surf shack — fishing rigs, ball sports and snorkelling gear — or arrange an excursion, from coastal kayaking to scuba diving.

How much? From $550–750 per night.

More impressive is Seascape, a romantic glass structure floating over the sea, and Scrubby Bay, a private beach house on the outer reaches of the property that allows for gatherings up to 14. The latter can only be accessed by helicopter or four-wheel-drive transfer and comes with three ocean-front suites, an outdoor swimming pool and deck overlooking the water. If you have some extra cash floating around there's the option to bump up your stay with a private chef.
